Resurface + retile

Pool Renovation, Resurfacing and Retiling

Resurfacing, retiling, coatings for salt air and UV, leak repair, new pumps and filters, LED lighting and automation, with permits handled.

Chapter 01

When a patch stops being the honest answer

A pool tells you it is done with patching in a few plain ways. The plaster has gone rough under your hand or stained in patches that no brushing lifts. A course of tile at the waterline has loosened or cracked. The water level drops between top-ups. The pump is loud and old, and the lights are the dated kind that dim a little more each season.

Hawaii is hard on all of it at once. Salt air corrodes metal and wears at surfaces, strong UV fades colour and weakens materials, and steady rain and humidity make leaks and mould more likely. A pool that looked fine ten years ago can be carrying damage you only see once the water is down.

That is why a renovation starts with looking, not with a finish sample. If one repair will do, we say so and point you to pool repair. If the shell, the plumbing and the equipment are all near the end of their life, resurfacing one of them alone just moves the problem.

What a renovation actually touches

The surface comes first for most owners. We resurface with durable plaster or Pebble Tec, a finish we install as a dealer, and retile with premium tile so the waterline course is sound again. Coatings are chosen for salt air and UV rather than for a catalogue colour.

Underneath the finish is where renovations earn their keep. Waterproofing and leak repair protect the structure, and the plumbing gets checked while the pool is empty and every pipe is reachable. New pumps and filters cut energy use and extend equipment life, LED lighting adds ambiance while using less power, and automation lets you run the pool from a phone.

Skilled hands matter more than the shopping list. Plaster applied well, tile set true and a coping edge left dead level are what make a renovated pool look like it was always meant to be that way.

Chapter 03

Permits and Honolulu code, handled as part of the job

A renovation is more than cosmetic once it changes anything structural, plumbed or wired. Altering the size, depth or shape of a pool, adding retaining walls or swim-outs, moving plumbing lines, relocating lights, pumps or automation, or rebuilding the deck and the barrier around the pool all call for a building permit in Honolulu. Pure surface cleaning and minor cosmetic fixes generally do not.

Safety code is where renovations most often fail inspection. The categories are the same on almost every job: a compliant barrier with a self-closing, self-latching gate, drain covers, non-slip deck surfaces, drainage that carries water away from the house, and properly grounded and bonded electrical with ground-fault protection in wet areas.

We prepare the permit documentation, coordinate with the engineers or architects when the scope needs them, and deal with the city and its inspectors so you are not the go-between. Review can run from weeks to a few months, so we ask owners to call early and we give a timeline that includes it.

Renovate, repair or rebuild?

One leak or one cracked tile is a job for pool repair. A pool that has outlived its shell, finish and equipment is a renovation. If the layout itself no longer suits the house, that is a conversation about design and construction. Once the work is done, our weekly pool maintenance keeps the new surface and equipment in good order, and the gallery shows finished pools around Oahu and Maui.
